Super sentai is a Japanese subgenre of tokusatsu television and movie series created by Shōtarō Ishinomori, in which multicolored teams fight for world peace against extraterrestrial or demonic forces. I took pictures of a football game for very young children and I imagined that their difficulties would come as monsters to destroy the earth. Only the very young, on the team, can save us.

Manolo Roma, già noto a livello nazionale e internazionale per le sue illustrazioni.
Vito is a beatnik from the future. An undercurrent noise that we neither can not want to
escape. The joy of work he carries around is contagious. In his images, his strokes speak
the unforgotten language of psychedelia, in a continuous interplay of inside and outside,
of real and unreal that over-stimulates our synapsis. In the portraits on show at this
exhibition/installation, conspicuously entitled “Dopin’ with vitomanoloroma (what’s yours?)”,
we see his skill at reproducing reality out of multiple perspectives and to the rhythm
of music. If art’s power is its ability to offer us a way of looking at things together, then we
must not forget that beauty needs levity, grace, vagueness, intensity and energy.

Nel 2005 esce in Giappone l’opera autobiografica: Shissou Nikki (Diario della mia scomparsa) che racconta gli anni passati per la strada dal fumettista giapponese Hideo Azuma.
Azuma è noto al pubblico italiano soprattutto per essere il creatore di Pollon e Nanà Supergirl, due serie iconiche degli anni ‘80. Dopo quel successo internazionale, la pressione sociale e l’abuso di alcol lo ha spinto a dissolversi nel mondo, sparendo letteralmente per due anni dove ha vagabondato per boschi e città, vivendo per strada la propria profonda depressione.
Ho avuto modo di lavorare all’edizione italiana del libro (2019, J-Pop) e conoscere meglio l’autore che ho sempre amato nella mia infanzia e con cui ho scoperto di avere delle oscure cose in comune. Le avventure di Pollon e le assurdità di Nanà mi rendevano felice, facevano di me un ragazzino allegro e sono state forse le ultime due eroine che hanno preceduto un periodo molto brutto e lungo della mia vita intima, psicologica.
Con questa installazione, non definitiva, voglio omaggiare la depressione di Azuma che non è mai una discesa nel degrado. Egli vive i suoi momenti peggiori con il nonsense tipico delle sue produzioni. Egli vive e beve all’interno di un cerchio da cui lui stesso vuole fuggire. E la sua storia di sguardi accesi sul mondo che lo circonda lo trasforma negli eroi di tutti gli “evaporati sociali”.
Siamo abituati a vedere e a sbirciare coloro che dormono per strada, e questa abitudine ci porta a passare davanti a loro senza neanche accorgercene. Ho voluto pensare al loro sguardo, allo sguardo di Azuma e non a quello degli altri. Ho voluto lavorare su una scelta di vita che mi ha sempre affascinato e, allo stesso tempo, tremendamente turbato.
